This custom-designed 2D pen plotter merges technology and art, transforming the simple act of drawing
into a captivating experience. Built specifically for Revelstoke Coffee, it explores the
intersection of precision engineering and creative expression. In addition to transforming photographs
into creative line drawings, the plotter draws intricate, computer generated designs. Each piece
produced by the plotter is unique, mirroring the individuality of both the machine and the creative spirit
of Revelstoke.
There are two drawing systems in the frame. The original method has a pen carriage that moves on linear
rails utilizing a simple cartesian coordinate system. In a more recent addition, often referred to as a PolarGraph,
the pen is carried by a gondola that hangs from two strings. The gondola has a battery that powers a small
servo to lift and lower the pen to the paper. It receives pen lift commands via a wireless connection with
the controller. The cartesian system can retrieve and replace pens from a tool bin automatically, while pens
must be manually loaded into the gondola of the PolarGraph.
